If I may paraphrase Mark Twain, “Reports of soaps’ death have been greatly exaggerated.”

emmystatue1. All My Children and One Life To Live’s reboot on the Internet can only be seen as positive, and their “Summer Fling” on Oprah Winfrey’s network OWN is a major coup for those shows and, more importantly, their devoted fans.

2. House of Cards getting nominated for nine Primetime Emmys is a huge shift in the way Internet/digital shows are being looked at. That means AMC and OLTL could be eligible for Daytime Emmys – and Tainted Dreams could be, too!

3. Speaking of Primetime Emmys, all six nominees for Outstanding Drama Series are continuing dramas, aka soap operas: Breaking Bad (AMC), Downton Abbey (PBS), Game of Thrones (HBO), Homeland (Showtime), House of Cards (Netflix), and Mad Men (AMC).

4. Marc Cherry’s new nighttime soap Devious Maids is averaging 2.2 million viewers through four episodes on Lifetime on what would traditionally be just sleepy Sunday nights. My personal faves on that show are Susan Lucci (duh), Ana Ortiz (Betty’s sister Hilda from Ugly Betty) and Grant Show (from Ryan’s Hope and Melrose Place) playing a married washed-up soap actor with an eye for the maid.

5. Ratings for all four network soaps are waaaay up from last year. Here are the numbers for total viewers from July 8-12, 2013 according to Soap Opera Network:

Y&R: 4,654,000 viewers +252,000

B&B: 3,509,000 viewers +444,000

DAYS: 2,450,000 viewers +220,000

GH: 2,449,000 viewers +131,000

Soaps were always bigger than people gave them credit for, and this resurgence proves it. They have influenced all forms of entertainment, Broadway and pop culture for decades. Did you know that one of the top sitcoms of all time named every character after someone on All My Children? Here’s some Friends trivia, courtesy of IMDb: “Ross was named for Ross Chandler, Joey for Joey Martin, Chandler for the Chandler family, Monica for Monique/Daisy Cortland, Rachel Greene for Janet Green, and Phoebe for Phoebe Tyler Wallingford.”

So to paraphrase the Friends theme song, “Soaps’ll be there for you…”

WINNERS ANNOUNCED! Congratulations to Kip E. Beabout and Cari Heisner who won our contest to be an extra during the taping of Tainted Dreams in New York City. Filming is August 6, location and time will be emailed to the lucky winners. Thanks to everyone who entered!

In mentioning the “Friends” ties to soaps, you didn’t mention that Chandler/Monica’s children were named “Erica” and “Jack”, LOL. I remember the night that episode aired and all the message boards went nuts. Someone on “Friends” was a AMC fan that’s for sure.

I forgot to mention that Devious Maids is a riot and I hope Susan Lucci stays on it and NEVER comes back to AMC. She is so above it now. Let her do something new and show her comedic skills. I am a diehard Jack/Erica fan but I can’t take another go around of Erica the bimbo who thinks she is vamp and can’t grow up enough to stay with her man. She is too old for that and she looks ridiculous doing it.
